Construction Accidents Common in the Summer

Common Causes of Construction Injuries

A Chicago summer often includes a significant increase in construction projects around the city. Unfortunately, this also means that workers in this industry are at a higher risk of sustaining an injury on the job. Here are some of the most common injury-causing incidents that occur on construction sites during this season.

Falls

Falls are one of the most frequent accidents that construction workers face; in fact, this is the leading cause of death among construction workers, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). According to the most recent OSHA data, over one-third of construction fatalities involved falls.

Struck By Incidents

Another hazard construction workers need to be aware of is being struck by an object. This can happen when materials are not properly secured and fall from a height, hitting unsuspecting workers below. Workers can also be hit by vehicles or machinery on the job site. Being struck by an object accounts for about one-third of construction injuries and fatalities and is considered the second most dangerous situation for these workers.

Electrical Hazard Injuries

Construction workers also need to be careful of electrical hazards, which can include coming into contact with power lines or exposed electrical wiring. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 75% of work-related electrocutions from 2012 to 2016 involved construction workers. And while rates of electrocutions have decreased over time, hundreds of individuals sustain these injuries each year.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Construction workers are also at risk of being injured in a motor vehicle accident. This can happen when they are working on or near a roadway and are struck by a passing car, truck, or other vehicle. On major highways like I-90 and I-290 where construction is rampant, drivers need to remain cautious of workers and alert to changing road conditions.
