Workers’ Compensation Medical Expenses in Indianapolis
Treatment Delayed or Bills Unpaid? Put Nearly 30 Years of Experience to Work
A work injury can leave you managing appointments, prescriptions, and medical bills while your employer or its insurer questions responsibility for the care. Because Indiana gives employers and insurers significant control over treatment, authorization can become the central issue when a procedure is delayed, a prescription is denied, or a provider sends you the bill.
At Leonard Law Group, we help Indianapolis workers evaluate medical expenses under Indiana workers’ compensation law. We review whether the claim and treatment were authorized, what the medical records show, and which options may be available through the Indiana Workers’ Compensation Board.

Medical Benefits Available After an Indiana Work Injury
Workers’ compensation medical benefits may cover care that is authorized, reasonable, necessary, and connected to a compensable workplace injury. Eligibility depends on the facts of the claim, the relationship between the injury and treatment, and compliance with Indiana’s authorization process.
Covered care may include:
- Physician appointments and evaluations
- Hospital care and surgical services
- Diagnostic testing, including imaging
- Physical or occupational therapy
- Prescription medication
- Medical equipment and related supplies
Medical benefits are separate from wage-loss payments, permanent-impairment benefits, and settlement issues. Indiana law can limit an employee’s responsibility for authorized care obtained through the workers’ compensation system. Treatment received outside that process, however, may leave the employee responsible for the bill.
Who Controls Medical Care in an Indiana Workers’ Compensation Claim?
Indiana generally allows the employer or insurer to direct treatment and select the authorized treating physician. If you visit another doctor without approval, you may be responsible for the cost even when the treatment concerns the same injury.
Authorization questions often arise with referrals, diagnostic testing, surgery, therapy, medication, and changes to work restrictions. Keep copies of treatment requests, appointment notices, bills, pharmacy messages, insurer correspondence, and instructions from the authorized treating physician. Don’t assume that a verbal request or medical recommendation has been approved.
Addressing Denied Treatment and Unpaid Medical Bills
A dispute may involve whether the injury is work-related, whether proposed care is reasonable and necessary, or whether a particular service was approved. Other cases involve unpaid provider charges, interrupted therapy, delayed procedures, or prescription problems.
Indiana uses a prescription formulary that identifies medications requiring payer approval. For certain non-preferred drugs, the payer may not have to cover the prescription without prior approval. If that issue isn’t addressed before the medication is filled, the worker could face an out-of-pocket charge.
Medical evidence can determine how a contested claim proceeds. Treatment notes, diagnostic results, physician opinions, work restrictions, and an independent medical examination may all affect the dispute. The Indiana Workers’ Compensation Board also has jurisdiction over provider fee disputes within the state system.
Formal Claim Proceedings
If informal efforts don’t resolve the problem, an injured worker may file an Application for Adjustment of Claim. This filing begins a formal Board case that may proceed to a hearing before a Single Hearing Member, the official assigned to decide contested claims. Depending on the circumstances and applicable deadlines, further review may be available after an award.
How We Approach Medical-Expense Disputes
We start by identifying the precise problem: a denied claim, delayed medical treatment authorization, disputed prescription, unpaid provider charge, or disagreement about recommended care. We then review the injury history, authorized-provider information, treatment recommendations, bills, payment records, and communications from the employer or insurer.
With nearly 30 years of workers’ compensation and personal injury experience, we evaluate medical records, communicate with employers and insurance companies, and represent injured workers in agency proceedings when necessary. Leonard Law Group reports recovering more than one billion dollars for injured clients through workers’ compensation trial awards and settlements. Every claim, however, depends on its own evidence and circumstances.
When you retain one of our partners, that partner remains directly involved rather than transferring responsibility for your case to associates. You have a consistent point of contact as treatment, billing, and claim issues develop. We don’t charge attorney fees for undisputed payment of medical bills or undisputed periods of temporary total disability, which are wage benefits paid during qualifying periods when an injury prevents work.
Get Clarity on Your Medical Benefits
We offer free consultations and free second opinions, including for workers who already have counsel but question how their medical benefits are being handled. Tell us about the injury, the current treatment problem, any unpaid bills, and communications from the employer or insurer. We can review the dispute and explain which records, authorization issues, or Indiana workers’ compensation procedures may shape your next step.
